The great content war

Dearest Reader,
Yesterday marked the anniversary of the infamous death of Mahsa Amini in Iran that led to the 24/7 coverage here in America on a foreign hyper-local issue. What struck me most is how powerful the correlation was between media coverage and people’s opinions of a single affair; and how a story could single-handedly become sensationalized on mainstream media. We were getting reports on ground stating otherwise, and when we ended up doing a deep dive, the reality was entirely opposing the dominating narrative.
This was our first big project at TMJ News that opened our eyes to the extent of misinformation out there. But could a small news organization take on such difficult stories, the manufacturing of mass content, and dominating perspectives? And if people’s minds were made up, how would we go about reversing the misinformation based on newfound information?
Content is so accessible these days that there is an extreme amount of information overload. Countries like Canada are scaling back and banning access to news on social media so that news companies locally can have leverage. While this minimizes the risk of misinformation as not everything we see on these platforms are true or remotely real, it also hides critical information that could benefit consumers. Where else would they see such content?
The point being is that we are facing a content war today. It's of high importance that we are careful of what we consume, and what we put out there for others to see, what we fight for, or what we remain quiet about as rights are slowly peeled away.
This is why we will be navigating to more charted territories such as this newsletter becoming more than a round up, or behind the scenes updates from me. Our newsletter will need to be the end goal, something that is a sure thing, something that cannot get shadowbanned, and helps us control the content we create.
The content war is a difficult fight, but a necessary one, and one that requires tactical strategies even in the digisphere. Journalism’s only true role is to inform the readers and give them truthful news even if it's difficult to hear. Mahsa Amini’s unfortunate death anniversary will continue to stand as that reminder of the time TMJ News stepped foot in difficult storytelling that is not always popular. But that’s what helped shape who we are today.
