Truth or Chinese Whispers?

A video came our way of a young boy who was forcibly taken from his home by the country’s “child protective services” and many of our readers wanted TMJ to cover it. From what several outlets reported, this dealt with a sensitive issue and much of the sources were hearsay. This gave us great pause; while the story being positioned this way could likely be the truth, there was no solid evidence confirming it. And this posed the great dilemma for us on the back end.

Everything we publish at TMJ News is triple checked and verified, and when we have even an iota of doubt, we won’t go through with publishing the story even if it means to have to let it go. While we aspire to one day have the bandwidth and far reaching resources to cover world wide news holistically, we know that as of right now, we may not be able to cover stories as fast as we’d like. Someone else could most likely get to it first.

However, it is important that whatever we publish or report on is as honest and factual as possible. Our silence usually means that we haven’t been able to verify a certain story (yet). This is because in the digital sphere, information travels fast, and misinformation even faster. As we have seen many times before, media outlets can redact articles and statements that were false, but that doesn’t affect the misinformation published originally that has already circulated far. We saw this in the case of the propaganda against Iran where celebrities reposted and shared articles on how “15,000 prisoners were to be executed” or Twitter statements and mass Whatsapp messages that have literally led to the deaths of innocent people.

So to be using media, let alone run a media outlet where multiple stories are written and published in a single day, we must be very cautious and responsible. Being honest is a key value at TMJ News as we seek to follow in the footsteps of our Holy Prophet (SAWW) who is known till today as the most honest man to have walked this earth.

In other news, the first season of For God and Country the show came to an end with the final episode 8 featuring a Muslim cowboy Brandon Estes, I know right?! I had come across Brandon’s interview on Deen TV and it was one of those, “I need to ask him more questions” kind of thing because I was simply intrigued. How does a Texas cowboy go from a raging alcoholic to a Shariah abiding Muslim studying in Saudi. Despite the challenges of filming in Ramadan and me with a very broken ankle, the episode turned out to be one of the most enlightening conversations I’ve had in a very long time. At one point, he spoke about grief and how when one sacrifices things in the path of God, it is always replaced with something better.

I continue to marvel at the growth we, journalists, are having with our work at TMJ News. Alhamdulillah, it is a barakah that seems to be never ending. I see us as the medium between truth and the public, and because we get to hear the stories and edit to make the information digestible, we are getting this wisdom that already exists within our communities first hand. I could not be more grateful.
