We cannot escape our past

Dearest Reader,
This week marked the sad day in Islamic History known as Ashura, on the tenth day of Muharram. It's a day that is undoubtedly filled with heaviness and grief, after understanding what took place on the lands of Karbala. How Muslims of the time, only 50 years after the passing of the Holy Prophet (P) came together to attack and massacre his family.
They brutally killed his grandson Hussain, his children, family and companions after denying them water for 3 days. The womenfolk were then shackled, paraded, and imprisoned in the dungeons.
This particular event is important for TMJ News because it serves as the intersection of faith and journalism. We cannot escape our past, and we need to understand it in order to look forward to our future. More importantly, we need to bring certain, hidden information to light to draw modern day connections.
Perhaps the most difficult part of this as editor has been to see the comments being hurled at us for covering the massacre of Karbala by many Muslims around the world. Many are quick to pit this as a Shia issue, but is it? Would we have mainstream Islam today, without the sacrifice of Hussain? Or would we have the altered religion that the drunkard ruler and tyrant Yazid was imposing on the people?
More importantly, TMJ incessantly covers injustices from the past and present, reports on a wide variety of topics, but it is this specific topic that is a sensitive touch point for many Muslims. But why? Is it not an important part of our shared fabric that shows how quickly a society can become immoral and debased under the right pretexts?
So this week, TMJ focused on capturing the spirit of Karbala, by reviving our extensive report, conducting interviews, publishing articles and also covering the injustices surrounding the commemoration of Ashura such as the explosion in Damascus, Syria aimed at mourners.
What happened in Karbala, and more importantly what happened afterwards to conceal the tragedy and spread propaganda, is important at TMJ News. Because to us, the womenfolk, namely Sayyeda Zainab the granddaughter of the Holy Prophet (P) was the first journalist of her kind. She kept the story alive despite the obstacles and measures used to conceal the shame of killing the family of the Prophet (P). And it is her courage, fearlessness, eloquence and sincerity that we hope to embody in our work today.
Warmly,
Your Editor
