In case no one noticed...

What’s Brewing?

In case no one has noticed, young American students are fighting hard for Palestine across campuses, through pushing awareness, holding events, peaceful demonstrations and academia. One organization in particular, Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) has been under fire for its advocacy work. Just on Feb. 8, Florida International University arrested an attendee of an SJP walkout after students held a peaceful demonstration to demand the university divest from weapons manufacturers. However, the protest was met with
with aggressive and physical police pressure throughout and continued after the protest. What’s more, police officers are said to have tracked down students and four campus police took one of the student protesters into a storage room and unlawfully detained him. They refused to give any info about his whereabouts for hours. While he was eventually released, charges still remain on his record. This comes after the SJP at Adelphi University mobilized efforts to shut down an event where an active Israeli soldier was invited to speak on campus on grounds of “free speech.” SJP board members and students have also faced harassment and censoring of their speech to not “upset parents.” The organization stated after the protest, “As Public Safety sat by and laughed as we got harassed on multiple occasions, we stood strong with each other and for the freedom of Palestine.” Reports on students getting harassed through college campuses and high schools has skyrocketed after Oct. 7, with no measures currently in sight to protect their safety, free speech rights and the rights to peaceful assembly. Things are getting concerning, especially as the interests of a foreign entity continue to be inflated with the interests of the American people.

Biden Warns Israel on Rafah Offensive

Apparently the US President just woke up to show concern about Palestinian lives after months of Israeli attacks and decades of military violence. Biden warned Netanyahu over the phone yesterday, saying he should not proceed with the assault on Rafah without “a credible and executable plan for ensuring the safety of and support for the civilians.” Americans want to know how exactly Biden’s moral compass malfunctioned, because there was no regard shown from American leadership for Palestinian lives as Israeli air strikes were killing them in the thousands, leaving them homeless in their homeland.

Japan Slips into Unexpected Recession

Experts say weak domestic consumption has pushed Japan into a recession, causing it to lose its position as the world’s third largest economy. Domestic demand, including consumer spending, has strongly weakened, and only external demand (exports of goods and services) are continuing to make a positive contribution. The Japanese have been battling high costs of living, as investments in housing have plummeted after the yen tumbled 6.6% against the US dollar since January.

Workers in Tech are Scared for their Jobs

Tech companies are realizing how replaceable human workers are. Just this week, Internet networking pioneer Cisco Systems announced it will be laying off more than 4,000 workers as it foresees sluggish demand for its products in the upcoming months. This move follows a succession of layoffs since the beginning of the year in Microsoft, Google, Tik Tok, eBay, and PayPal, among others. Tech workers are worried they might lose their livelihoods in a matter of days in an industry that’s already profiting off the payroll cuts.

Greece Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage

The Athens parliament voted yesterday in favor of a bill to legalize same-sex marriage, making Greece the first Christian Orthodox nation to make such a move. Despite receiving backlash from the New Democracy party, the Greek government championed the new decision, saying it ends “serious inequality for our democracy.” Orthodox bishops and conservative leaders have condemned the move as “monstrous” legislation. But Greece might have just opened a forbidden door for other Christian nations to walk through.
