Muslim Brew - 20th April

Anyone have a mop?

What’s Brewing?

It's a rare sight to see, but when it happens we definitely want to bring out the popcorn. Seyed Mohammad Marandi, a professor in Tehran, wiped the floor with Piers Morgan on the latest interview, mostly challenging him with the questions, “bring the evidence,” “show the evidence,” “where is the evidence?” He also outright called Morgan “dishonest” and did not shy away from the infamous Piers Morgan catchphrase “Do you condemn Hamas.” In fact, he said he cannot condemn that which is a Resistance operation that was inevitable when people are fighting for their freedom. We wonder if Morgan enjoyed this beating, because Marandi did not give him room to contort his message. There was a long, awkward pause to confirm this, as Morgan processed everything on screen. Mainly, he was brought on the show to discuss the latest “strike” on Iran allegedly by Israel, which they have yet to claim by the way. While many have written off the latest happenings as political theater, a greater soft war is brewing, with a lot at stake.

Over 100 Columbia University Students Arrested over Palestine Protests

The NYPD arrested more than 100 Columbia University students during a Palestine protest, where hundreds camped outside the school’s South Lawn, a designated “free speech zone,” demanding university leadership to financially divest from Israel. Columbia University President Minouche Shafik authorized the NYPD to “begin clearing the encampment,” which translated to arrests, suspensions, and even on-campus housing evictions against students who peacefully exercised their free speech rights.

The IMF Sounds New Alarms over US National Debt

The International Monetary Fund has issued a new warning that the astronomical rise in the US national debt poses “significant risks” to the global economy and threatens to fuel even higher inflation. Under current policies, public debt in the US is projected to double by 2053, a reality that will not only undermine financial stability globally, but also threaten America’s economic standing.

Google Fires Employees over Anti-Israel Protests

Google fired 28 of its employees who participated in peaceful sit-ins, protesting the company’s ties with Israel, specifically in relation to Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion contract to provide the Israeli military with cloud and AI services. While Google said the employees were fired for “impeding other employees’ work,” the activist group that organized the sit-in, No Tech for Apartheid, described the firings as illegal and discriminatory.

US Blocks Palestine’s Chance at Full UN Membership

Twelve countries voted on Thursday in support of a resolution that would have paved the way for Palestine’s full membership at the UN. The US, however, once again vetoed the resolution, saying the only path to Palestinian statehood should be through negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians. This is while “negotiations” thus far have featured Israel’s six-month bombardment of Gaza, which has killed over 33,000 Palestinians thus far.
