The uncertain fate of America’s press freedom

What’s Brewing?

This week, mainstream media has remained eerily silent on the case of Julian Assange as his attorneys (and wife) fight for their last chance at contesting extradition to the United States. Assange leaked sensitive documents on July 25, 2010, which many compare to the 1970s Pentagon Papers. The documents exposed war crimes by the USA in Afghanistan and Iraq. Assange’s wife, Stella Assange, argues that the government will have him killed as they continue to hold him in prison. Assange continues to be held in London’s high security Belmarsh prison for the past five years, where he is kept in solitary confinement for 23 hours per day. If convicted, Assange faces 175 years in prison, most likely in solitary confinement. Successful prosecution of Julian Assange, however, could threaten press freedom for all journalists. As an example, Carrie Decell, a senior staff attorney at Knight First Amendment Institute, says that whatever Assange did is what National Security reporters “engage in every single day” all of which is covered under the “First Amendment.” It remains to be seen what the outcome of Julian Assange’s case would be, and if denied he would have to appear in Virginia courts for sentencing. Least to say, the fate of America’s press freedoms is quite, quite precarious.

US Blocks Third UN Attempt at Ceasefire

The US has once again abused its veto power at the UN Security Council to block a ceasefire push that called for an immediate humanitarian truce in Gaza. Washington was the sole “no” vote, while Britain abstained. The rest of the 13 nations in the 15-member council favored the Algeria-drafted resolution, which aimed to support the Palestinians’ right to life. Palestinian UN Ambassador Riyad Mansour said the US veto game for the past several ceasefire resolutions is sending a global message to Israel “that it can continue to get away with murder.”

Starbucks Introduces Pork-Flavored Coffee

Amidst intense boycotts, Starbucks has made yet another desperate move to boost its sales, this time catering to customers in China. The new pork-flavored coffee, dubbed “Nian Feng Savory Latte,” includes a braised pork flavor and pork breast meat for garnish. Starbucks launched the flavor for the Chinese New Year,  attempting to relate meat to the Chinese symbol of prosperity. The unconventional flavor has sparked much controversy at a time when the company has experienced a heavy decline in sales, but insists on making desperate moves to maintain its second biggest market after the US.

Benz Overtakes Tesla as Most Valuable Auto Brand

Tech companies are realizing how replaceable human workers are. Just this week, Internet networking pioneer Cisco Systems announced it will be laying off more than 4,000 workers as it foresees sluggish demand for its products in the upcoming months. This move follows a succession of layoffs since the beginning of the year in Microsoft, Google, Tik Tok, eBay, and PayPal, among others. Tech workers are worried they might lose their livelihoods in a matter of days in an industry that’s already profiting off the payroll cuts.

UN Calls for Investigation into Israeli Sexual Assault of Palestinian Women

UN experts say they have seen credible allegations that Palestinian women and girls have been subjected to sexual assualt and rape while in Israeli detention. UN Special Rapporteur Reem Al-Salem said Israeli violence against Palestinian women and civilians has been normalized throughout the war, but Israel has denied these claims. The UN is now demanding a full investigation into what they have called “egregious human rights violations,” all while Israel continues to get away with heinous crimes with zero accountability.

What Else is Brewing?

  • More than half of NYC city lives in poverty, according to the Poverty Tracker annual report. Jeez, they have the money to send billions in aid packages abroad while the American people live in poverty.

  • Alabama Supreme Court ruled that embryos (usually 3 week fetuses) are human beings, which complicates IVF procedures as mishandling embryos could lead to criminal prosecution.

  • Israel seems to be getting into a lot of trouble these days, especially in the sporting front. The Ice Hockey Federation banned the Israeli hockey team citing “safety concerns” and could affect their participation in the U20 World Championship games.

  • Was anyone surprised when the US vetoed a ceasefire in Gaza for the third time? We definitely weren’t.

  • The NBA All Star Weekend was truly something, as pro-Palestine protesters held up a massive sign that read “Let Gaza Live.” It was so big and so red that the Jumbotron had no choice but to capture the scene.

  • TMJ’s sign went up at the headquarters; don’t miss the behind the scenes action!

  • Ukraine’s terrorism case against Russia was massively squashed at the ICJ, dealing the US backed nation a heavy blow to the ego.

  • The Israeli economy continues to plummet due to its war on Gaza, but guess who's always there to bail them out? The US will cover their 19.4% decline with a new $14 billion aid package as usual.

Can you solve this?

“Which word in the dictionary is always spelled incorrectly?”Reply with your guess. P.S: The answer to the last week’s riddle ‘What is brown and has a tail, a head, and no legs?’ is ‘A Coin’. Had you guessed it right?
