The second-class citizens

What’s Brewing?

Mainstream media continues to play a dangerous game, but now they're just getting sloppy. Recently, anti-Islam articles have been written targeting the Dearborn Muslim majority community, so naturally, we got curious. We decided to look into MEMRI, a voice that media outlets like Wall Street Journal and the New York Times frequently amplifies. Turns out, MEMRI is an American non-profit press monitoring and analysis organization that was co-founded by Israeli ex-intelligence officer Yigal Carmon and Israeli American political scientist Meyrav Wurmser in 1998. Its translated posts have been regularly cited in mainstream media outlets in the U.S., including the New York Times, Fox News, Los Angeles Times, and the Washington Post. What's worse is that in 2011, MEMRI received a $200,000 grant from the US State Department’s Office of International Religious Freedom. As TMJ News continues to investigate this organization and why it's writers' articles such as “Welcome to Dearborn, America's Jihad Capital,” lead to heightened security in Muslim communities, we are starting to realize that the media world continues to Frontline such stories. Whether it's sensational media they care about, or these are their agendas at play, what we do know is that they certainly think Muslims in America are second-class citizens.

US Police Crack Down on Nationwide Student Protests

US police arrested more than 80 protesters on Wednesday as part of crackdowns on pro-Palestine demonstrations which have gained momentum across American university campuses. This comes after students at New York’s Columbia University set up tent camps, demanding that universities cut ties to Israel and divest from companies allegedly contributing to the Gaza conflict. Thousands of students have staged demonstrations in response to Israel’s assault on Gaza.

Google Temporarily Blocks California News Outlets

Google has temporarily blocked links from local news outlets in California from appearing in search results in response to a proposed bill that would require tech companies to pay publications for links that articles share. The California Journalism Preservation Act (CJPA) would require large online platforms to pay a “journalism usage fee.” The bill is meant to support the local journalism industry, but it’s already angering Californians who cannot Google local news anymore.

US Births Reach 45-year Low

The National Center for Health Statistics has revealed that Women in the US are having children at the lowest rate in 45 years. Only 3.59 million births were recorded in the country in 2023, the lowest since the 3.4 million figure recorded in 1979. Demographers attribute a number of reasons to this, including young adults delaying family formation for financial reasons such as economic strain, work instability, and skyrocketing costs of health and childcare.
