Rise of the student intifada

What’s Brewing?

This week, TMJ News sent a field crew to cover the student pro-Palestine encampment at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. With more than 120 American institutions staging encampments at their universities despite arrests, raids, crackdowns and agitations by pro-Israelis, there is a serious student-led intifada that is at the forefront of American politics today. It’s serious enough that US politicians as well as authorities haven’t been able to ignore, putting an anti-semitism bill in motion that will punish anyone that shows hatred to the Israeli regime. Canadian universities such as University of Toronto and students in Ottawa have also joined the movements, with no signs of slowing down. The interesting thing is that the pro-Palestine movement has only strengthened through time, defying critics who said that efforts would fatigue themselves with each passing day. TMJ’s field crew was the only media outlet given clearance to speak to student organizers of the movement, as well as those volunteering and staying at the encampment. TMJ News will be covering this extensively over the next few weeks as the student-led intifada continues to gain momentum through North America and beyond.

Pro-Palestine Protests in US Campuses Go Global

Students have set up protest camps at more than 40 colleges across the US since mid-April, demanding that both Washington and their universities cut ties with Israel and put an end to the violence in Gaza. But now the protests have gone global. Protesters have set up encampments across college campuses in Canada, Australia, France, and the UK, saying that they were inspired by Columbia University students in their fight for divestment.

US Fast Food Chains May be in a Crisis

Data from fast food sales shows that more people in the US are choosing to eat at home. This is reflected by the US consumer confidence index, which fell for the third consecutive month in April. The research group found that the first place Americans are looking to save money is on meals away from home. It seems fast food giants may have to try harder to lure inflation-hit customers who are realizing home-cooked meals taste better anyway.

Sam’s Club Rolls Out Latest AI Technology

Sam's Club has begun rolling out artificial intelligence-powered technology that confirms members' purchases as they exit the stores. The new verification technology, which replaces physical receipt checks, has so far been deployed at 120 Sam's Club locations across the US. This marks the latest large-scale AI-powered technology in the retail industry, which will likely become the new norm soon.

Second Boeing Whistleblower Suddenly Dies

Joshua Dean, a former Spirit AeroSystems employee who raised alarms over lax standards in the production of Boeing’s 737 MAX jet, has died following a sudden and severe illness. In March, another Boeing whistleblower was found dead in a hotel parking lot in what authorities described as a suicide. The 737 MAX airliner has had a history of accidents, including two leading to multiple deaths. But the sudden deaths of Boeing whistleblowers raises flags about what’s really happening behind the scenes.

What Else is Brewing?

  • ISIS attacks a Shia mosque in Afghanistan, killing 6 among whom was a baby. The attackers gunned worshippers down with a machine gun and fled the scene shortly after. Netizens have been wondering if ISIS are related to Israel seeing that majority of ISIS victims are Muslims themselves.

  • In good news, Brown University seems to be succumbing to encampment pressure as the university agrees to an Israel divestment vote. Students will be meeting with trustees and will be given a chance to give their demands.

  • Iran’s Shiraz University has offered scholarships to students who have been suspended or expelled due to their pro-Palestine activism

  • UCLA student gets shot in the head at the pro-Palestine encampment but not by agitators, but by police forces.

Can you solve this?

How many letters are in the alphabet?Reply with your guess. P.S: The answer to the last week’s riddle “I have no life, but I can die. What am I?” is ‘Battery’. Had you guessed it right?
