Power, Force, and the Price Paid by Civilians
From closed-door talks to forced displacement, the consequences are felt far beyond those making the decisions. — TMJ Insider
TMJ INSIDER

Welcome back, Insider.
From closed-door diplomacy to forced displacement, this week’s developments reveal how power continues to shape outcomes across the world.
This week’s stories point to a familiar reality. Power continues to operate quietly behind closed doors while its consequences play out loudly on the ground.
Syrian and Israeli officials reportedly met in Paris for direct negotiations, alongside discussions of intelligence coordination. These developments come as Israeli forces and settlers carried out more than 24,000 attacks in the occupied West Bank in 2025, according to new reports, underscoring the disconnect between diplomacy and daily violence.
In Iran, authorities announced the arrest of an alleged Mossad operative during unrest in Tehran, highlighting the growing role of intelligence narratives in justifying internal crackdowns.
In Latin America, the U.S. capture of former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro revived comparisons to Saddam Hussein’s arrest in 2003. Maduro has since pleaded not guilty to U.S. narco-terrorism charges, as controversy emerged over media guidance discouraging the use of the word “kidnapping” to describe his removal.
Meanwhile in Sudan, nearly 65,000 people have fled Kordofan amid escalating insecurity, according to the United Nations, as mass displacement continues with little global attention.
Across regions, the pattern remains the same. Power sets the terms. Language follows. Civilians pay the price.
