A New Month and Breaking News

Logo

A new month, a tall to do list, and most importantly the egg crisis.

That's right. There is an egg shortage in the country and a swirl of perspectives here. And when things seem fishy, you best believe TMJ wants a piece of that pie.

It's interesting how storyboards in the backend are made. We could be hyper focused on something but if another interesting topic comes our way, the others are moved to the back of the line. It's ever changing, fast, and keeps you on your toes. Fatima, the executive producer and co-founder of TMJ is always saying to come up with broader topics that will still be relevant, but that's a difficult feat with news.

That being said, we filmed the first ‘For God and Country’ show where we got to be our authentic selves; others have been with guests which we will continue to do so. But this solo act will be us breaking relevant things down, getting angry (quite a bit, yikes) and talking about things with an entirely different angle, and we think that is valuable.

It's not that we try to be different here at TMJ, it's just the nature of things. We live and project our values and because of that, always end up somehow going against every grain. It gets exhausting but it's also invigorating to work for a cause that's greater than yourself. We call it the stuff for the bones and the stuff for the soul.

In more exciting news, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf's documentary ‘Stand’ just released and we’re happy he is finally getting the attention he deserves. Most people don't get celebrated for their bravery in their lifetimes, and we’re hoping this sets a precedent especially for the young ones.

While we've been reporting breaking news, like the alleged Chinese spy balloon downed by the US air force (or was it a paper lantern as a comment suggested LOL) or the Quebec Anti-Islamophobia representative that was literally hired to do her job but when she did they didn't like it (make up your minds, sheesh), we worked on feature news pieces like the Near Death Experience written by a daughter about her mother's hijab. We also made reels videos about Tyre Nichols, the French woman throwing coins at Vietnamese children and the growing Palestinian resistance, which all get a higher amount of engagement on social media.

Sometimes we’re itching to do nothing but make short videos all day, but we realize that's not true journalism. We must do the soundbites as well as good, meaty investigations, analysis and reports for our readers to benefit from. If it wasn't for our super high ethical standards I don't know where we would be. Probably really really successful.

In our queue we have a report on myocarditis and the Covid vaccine, we have Zainab Right’s new show on Hijab and Politics accompanied by a written investigative report, a feature on a congressional debate winner in Windermere and so much more. We always plan out our week in terms of the editorial calendar but it's crazy how fast news slaps you. That's why we are okay not being the first, but the best. And we are definitely working our way up to being the best in the game.
